Anyone who keeps, works with, trades, transports, cares for, medicates, sells, buys, or otherwise interacts with animals and plants, or simply spends time in the outdoors, encounters legal obligations and regulations at various levels.

This seminar offers a comprehensive insight into the most important national and international legal frameworks. Special emphasis is placed on understanding the different perspectives of these legal requirements, their practical application, and ensuring correct compliance across a range of activities.

During presentations and round-table discussions with US authorities, including the US Fish and Wildlife Service, representatives of zoos and zoo organisations, scientists, and environmental and animal welfare organisations, the following topics will be addressed:

  • Trade in wild species & species protection
  • Invasive alien species
  • International conventions
  • Hunting & fisheries
  • The roles of zoos & aquaria
  • Management, protection and restoration of populations, habitats & ecosystems

Expert-guided visits will also be included to protected areas, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute.
